"To care as little as about the year 40" is a French expression meaning "not to give a care". Well, this is 1940 and the Germans have invaded France. But, paradoxically, a well off couple will remember it fondly. Indeed, fleeing the invaders they gradually lose all their material possessions but discover the true meaning of life instead.
